Pack Your Own Lunch

As a part of our Dress up Day we encouraged the children to ‘pack their own picnic’. Here are some photos of our lunches we packed with some help from home. This activity encourages children to develop responsibility.

At the end of each term the children get to take their individual portfolios home to share with their families. The children are always very excited about this. It makes all the work worthwhile for staff to see the children reflecting on their term.

We tried some shadow art this week to complement our talking about shadows. The children drew a picture. The teachers cut out the picture and also a blackout line of the picture. The children pasted the two shapes on – offset to give the impression of a shadow. Then they pasted a frame of coloured squares around their picture.

Drawing Stories

I was introduced to ‘Drawing Stories’ at the recent Early Years Conference in Melbourne. We tried them out this week. The idea is the teacher models drawing and story and talks the children through the story as she draws. I added ‘talking bubbles’ to the story to also give the children opportunities to ‘write’. The children did a great job. We shared our stories around the circle. I tried to write the stories, but some were so long and complex – I needed to use a video. It is a way of extending children’s language and finding out what they know about topics that interest them. We based our first stories around a common topic – our Sensory Snakes – but I would like the children to initiate their own topics in the future. We will add this to our program once a week.

We made Sensory Snakes this week with socks filled with wheat. We added felt and wriggly eyes to our snakes. The idea behind the snake is that children use the heaviness of them to steady themselves on the mat and after periods of vigorous play. Some children had never seen a sewing machine before – and they enjoyed watching the teachers sewing up their snakes.

Ball Handling

The children have become very skilled with their ball handling this term. They have made up a game where they bounce on the trampoline and I throw the ball for them to catch. You need to be quite skilled to catch a ball while jumping.

Over the last few weeks we have been working on a project to make Picasso Heads out of cereal boxes. I wanted the children to learn that art is a process. It can take many sessions and involve layers. First we painted the boxes white to cover the print (two layers). Then we painted the boxes in two colours and added a black line. The final step was to add collage for the features. We have strung then up to the rafters and the children loved the result of all their hard work. I think we did Picasso proud!

At Pop-up Play today we had had some more playmates from the school join us at 11 am. Another beautiful day for playing outside.
The boys were keen to make guns today so a lot of play revolved guns. Jasper and Aidan made a gun cabinet for their guns!
Some boys made a ‘dungeon’ from tyres. They had it propped up with sticks and they used a wooden ladder to get in and out.
The school kids made lots of small things today – including a bird cage and a robot.
We used the sheets more to make roofs for our cubbies.
We had a very big clean up today. All the boxes were stacked and all the rubbish was picked up. We stacked the pipes and tyres into the trailer. We had a lot of children and boxes on the bus to come back to Pre School. The Pre School children enjoyed catching up with Darcy again.
So long Pop-up Play – we will see you again next year.
Thank you to all our visitors – it was a great day.
